Last week, our colleague Andrea Rossbach had the opportunity to participate in workshops and discussions in Montevideo and Buenos Aires ‘towards more sustainable agricultural production’ with biological inputs as key towards this goal in Uruguay, Argentina and Germany.
The two South American countries have a vibrant research and start-up community developing new biological products and it was amazing to see all these new developments taking place.
The current situation and challenges for the regulatory framework of biological control actives and products as well as biostimulants was discussed in meetings with participants of the Ministry of Livestock and Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) and the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA) in Uruguay as well as the National Service for Health and Quality of Agrifoods (SENASA) and the National Agricultural Technology Institute (INTA) in Argentina.
A panel discussion during the Aapresid (Argentinian No Till Farmers Association) Congress 2024 in Buenos Aires allowed participation from a wider audience. All three countries face different challenges and Andrea presented the regulatory structure in the European Union and in Germany for the registration of biological control agents, specifically microorganisms and natural substances.
Andrea was invited by the Diálogo Agropecuario Uruguayo-Alemán (DAUA = Uruguayan-German Dialogue on Agriculture) and was honoured to have this opportunity to exchange information on different aspects regarding biocontrol in agriculture.
